Mark your calendars! Registration for the 2010 Summer Reading Program begins June 14!

Summer's on its way, and so is the Lee County Library's summer reading program. Registration begins Monday, June 14 and will continue until all spots are filled. This year's theme is "Make a Splash @ Your Library." Prizes! Games! Fun! Stay tuned to the blog for more details!

How the "Reading" part of the Summer Reading Program Works

  • Anyone can read! Babies, grandparents, teens--just come in to the library and get a reading record. Keep track of the time you spend reading by placing a sticker in one of the spots on the chart: one sticker equals 15 minutes of reading time.

  • Everyone who completes their reading record will be invited to a "Grand Finale" pool party at O.T. Sloan Pool on Monday, July 26 from noon 'til 2:00 p.m. Remember, you MUST complete your reading record, and you must bring it with you to be admitted to the pool party. If you are participating in any of the summer reading programs and performances, bring your reading record with you for librarians to check.

Summer Programs for Young Children

  • For children ages birth to two years, summer story time will be held on Mondays at 10 a.m. beginning Monday, June 14 and continuing each Monday until July 19. NOTE: the library will be closed on Monday, July 5. These programs last between 20 and 30 minutes and include simple stories, rhymes, fingerplays, and music. No registration is necessary. Story time meets in the library auditorium.

  • For children ages 3 to 5, summer story time will be held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. beginning Thursday, June 17 and continuing until Thursday, July 29. NOTE: There will be no story time on Thursday, July 1. These programs last between 30 and 45 minutes and may include stories, rhymes, songs, actions, fingerplays, flannelboard stories, puppet shows, and crafts. No registration is necessary. Programs meet in the library auditorium EXCEPT the final story time on July 29, which will meet by the fountain at Depot Park, weather permitting.

Programs for Elementary School age children

Each week, the library offers programs for rising first graders (must have completed kindergarten) through rising sixth graders (must have completed fifth grade). Each week's program is based on a different theme: Rain, Fishing-Ponds-Rivers-Frogs, Ocean, Pirates, and Beach. Programs include stories, games, crafts, and movies. Choose the day and time that best fits your schedule:

Tuesdays at 10:00 OR Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.

All programs meet in the library auditorium. Registration is REQUIRED, as space is limited. Sorry, but due to very limited space we cannot accommodate daycares, large groups, or younger siblings in these programs.

Monday Night Movies

Join us on Monday nights at 7 p.m. for a FREE family-friendly classic movie! Begins Monday, June 14. Bring a light snack and a drink. Registration is not necessary; however, seating is first come first served.

Wednesday Performances

There are four FREE, family-friendly midweek performances. These are open to the public, and summer camps, daycares, and other groups are invited to attend. Please note that ALL of the performances listed below will be held at the Lee County Community Arts Center, 507 N. Steele Street, Sanford. Entrances to the parking lot and the building are on Bracken Street. Also note that there is no room for baby strollers in the auditorium.
